The Hybrid Tiger by Quanyu Huang

The Hybrid Tiger was a great read. In essence, it was a rebuttal to Amy Chua's book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. Quanyu Huang presents a unique and personal narrative about Asian-American parenting, and the challenges he personally faced while raising his son in America.

Along the way, he discusses the secrets of why Asians are generally more academically successful then their American counterparts. In a nutshell: they just study and work harder. No secret.

He also states that Chinese students are far superior in primary and secondary education. On the other hand, American students highly surpass their Chinese peers in research and postgraduate education. In fact, since the first Nobel Prizes in science were awarded in 1901, no Chinese research institution has ever won. Chinese students may have the upper hand early in the race; but, American students undoubtedly surpass their Chinese peers in the long run.
"From kindergarten to high school, the students seemed to care very little about learning. Most were inattentive and uninterested. Some were even actively disruptive and highly disrespectful."            - Asian view of American education.

Even in the poorest and most remote places, education is valued.
Dr. Huang is director of the Asian/Asian-American Studies Program and an associate professor at Miami University of Ohio, as well as author of numerous books.
