In The Pond - A Novel by Ha Jin

This book was required reading for fall term.

Quick Synopsis:

The protagonist, Shao Bin, works at the Harvest Fertilizer Plant as a machine fixer in provincial China. He has worked there for many years, but has never made the list to receive an apartment suitable for his family. When he decides to fight for his cause, he faces adversity, while attempting to expose the corruptions of his superior leaders in his hometown.

How Does This Relate to Education?

At first, it's difficult to ascertain how this story relates to education, but diving deeper into the meaning of this story, I feel that the culture portrayed is analogous with many tumultuous school cultures in our nation; corruption, lies, deceit, power hungry. Ever heard of the good ol' boys club? Exactly.

Shao Bin can easily be a teacher fighting for the rights of children, while the leaders, with their own personal agenda, sit back and laugh at him; making his life increasingly more difficult along the way. I really enjoyed this story. If you have an opportunity, read it.

Against the current you must punt hard;
One Stroke skipped, you fall back many a yard.
The ancients said every minute was gold;
So, cherish your time and have it controlled.
